Project Details
Description
(3) deep damage of surface and substrate in the plasma facing components by runaway electrons that can induce costly secondary damages. The primary objective of the Tokamak Disruption Simulation (TDS) SciDAC Center is to help establish the physics basis for disruption mitigation in a reactor-size tokamak through large-scale simulations, using the largest computers available. The TDS center applies and further develops a host of advanced physics codes that are required for high-fidelity and multi-fidelity disruption modeling. It addresses critical physics issues underlying thermal quench and current quench by integrating three dimensional magnetic fields, transport, radiation, and runaway electron dynamics, from core to edge, and to boundary. These physics thrusts are enabled by advanced applied mathematics and computer science research that are tailored for the specific challenges in disruption modeling.
