Abstract

Since the mandibular osteotomy described by Hullihen [1], maxillomandibular fixation (MMF) during the healing period has been the fixation method of choice (Fig. 43.1). New surgical techniques include the use of rigid and semi-rigid internal fixation (RIF) with plates [2] and/or screws [3, 4] (Fig. 43.2). The avoidance of MMF allows increased stability and improved postoperative care [4, 5] and accelerates psychological recovery [6].
