Afterlife of empire: Ottoman continuities and Muslims of Bosnia and Herzegovina during the Habsburg occupation, 1878-1914

This dissertation expands on contemporary critical studies of empires through the study of Muslims in Bosnia Herzegovina and their relationship with the Ottoman Empire in the period of the Habsburg occupation (1878-1914). This relationship is evidenced in petitions and correspondence between the Bosnian Muslims and the Ottoman government, as well as government policies responding to waves of migration to the Ottoman lands. By contextualizing political, social, religious, and press records, this project charts the shaping of identity politics of the period.
