But rather than focusing on the roots of the financial crisis, Nicol is fascinated by the power game of accusation and defense. “My work looks at individual as well as collective behavior in the face of responsibility,” she explains. Who are the actors involved? What social processes lead to singling out those to blame? How to do the blamed actors respond to these attacks? 
By analyzing news articles, congressional hearings and interviews held since September 2008, she explores the production of discourse from both sides of the blame game in the United States. “These processes are partly responsible for shaping the regulation of the banking system, which is why it’s important to better describe them.”
