Mitochondrial Regulation of Hematopoietic Stem Cells

Stem cells in the bone marrow produce all blood cells over the lifetime of an individual. We can, however, not maintain these cells in vitro, which would have major applications for the treatment of genetic and malignant blood diseases. The goal of this proposal is further study the specific cell biology of these cells and, using these findings, develop a novel strategy to maintain and expand blood stem cells in vitro.
