Description

OZONE DRY DEPOSITION THE PROCESS BY WHICH THE GAS IS TAKEN UP BY THE EARTH S SURFACE IS AN IMPORTANT YET OFTEN OVERLOOKED AND POORLY CONSTRAINED TROPOSPHERIC OZONE LOSS PATHWAY WITH IMPLICATIONS FOR ECOSYSTEM PRODUCTIVITY AND THE GLOBAL CARBON CYCLE. WE PROPOSE A WORKSHOP TO FACILITATE COLLABORATION AMONG THE SCIENTIFIC COMMUNITIES THAT MEASURE AND MODEL OZONE DRY DEPOSITION ATMOSPHERIC CHEMISTRY CANOPY PROCESSES AND SURFACE-ATMOSPHERE EXCHANGE. WE HAVE RECEIVED SOME MATCHING FUNDING FOR THE WORKSHOP AND REQUEST HERE TRAVEL SUPPORT TO ENABLE ADDITIONAL SCIENTISTS INCLUDING THOSE WITH EXPERTISE IN NASA EARTH SCIENCE DATASETS AND MODELS TO PARTICIPATE. TROPOSPHERIC OZONE IS A STRONG GREENHOUSE GAS A PRIMARY CONSTITUENT OF GROUND-LEVEL SMOG AND CENTRAL TO THE ATMOSPHERIC OXIDIZING CAPACITY WHICH CONTROLS THE REMOVAL OF OTHER AIR POLLUTANTS AND REACTIVE GREENHOUSE GASES. OZONE DEPOSITING THROUGH PLANT STOMATA CAN INTERFERE WITH PLANT CAPACITY TO TAKE UP ATMOSPHERIC CARBON DIOXIDE LINKING THIS OZONE DRY DEPOSITION PATHWAY TO THE GLOBAL CARBON CYCLE. CURRENTLY THE MAGNITUDE OF THIS AIR POLLUTION-CLIMATE SYSTEM INTERACTION IS POORLY QUANTIFIED. DESPITE AN UPTICK IN PRESENTATIONS ON OZONE DRY DEPOSITION AT ATMOSPHERIC CHEMISTRY MEETINGS IN THE LAST TWO YEARS THERE IS NO CLEAR PICTURE EMERGING FOR HOW BEST TO IMPROVE THE RELATIVELY CRUDE OZONE DRY DEPOSITION PARAMETERIZATIONS APPLIED IN MODELS USED TO INTERPRET ATMOSPHERIC CHEMISTRY OBSERVATIONS AND TO PROJECT FUTURE AIR QUALITY AND CLIMATE. A GENERAL LACK OF INTERACTION BETWEEN THE OZONE DRY DEPOSITION MODELING AND MEASUREMENT COMMUNITIES HINDERS THE RAPID ADVANCE OF OUR UNDERSTANDING OF THIS PROCESS AND ITS ROLE IN PRESENT AND FUTURE ATMOSPHERIC CHEMISTRY CLIMATE AND ECOSYSTEMS. THE OVERARCHING GOALS OF THE PROPOSED WORKSHOP ARE TO (1) PRIORITIZE RESEARCH EFFORTS REQUIRING COLLABORATION ACROSS MULTIPLE EARTH SCIENCE COMMUNITIES (2) GALVANIZE EFFORTS TO BUILD SUPPORT FOR A NETWORK OF LONG-TERM OZONE DRY DEPOSITION MONITORING SITES COMPLEMENTARY INTENSIVE SHORT-TERM MEASUREMENT CAMPAIGNS AND CONNECT THESE EFFORTS WITH RELEVANT PRODUCTS RETRIEVED FROM SATELLITE INSTRUMENTS AND (3) IDENTIFY EXISTING DATASETS AND PLAN FOR THEIR LONG-TERM ARCHIVAL TO ENSURE THAT THEY CAN BE PART OF FUTURE RESEARCH ATTEMPTS TO SYNTHESIZE KNOWLEDGE OF OZONE DRY DEPOSITION ACROSS SPACE AND TIME. OUR WORKSHOP GOALS DIRECTLY ADDRESS THE CALLS OF THE RECENT NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCES ENGINEERING AND MEDICINE (NASEM) REPORT [NASEM 2016] FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF RESEARCH INFRASTRUCTURE TO ADVANCE ATMOSPHERIC CHEMISTRY.
