Description

While ubiquitous, the interaction between photons and atoms still poses open questions. Answering them not only provides a deeper understanding of fundamental science, but also enables the realization of efficient quantum technologies. In this theoretical proposal we will investigate quantum synchronization between ensembles of qubits (two-level systems that are the building block of quantum applications), a phenomenon called superradiance. This synchronization occurs due to dissipation in the form of photon emission, and leads to the emission of a rapid burst of light. This process may enable the generation of light sources with quantum properties, and of new type of lasers. Surprisingly, at long times, the correlated dynamics of the qubits will also give rise to the emergence of quantum states that are protected from decay. We will investigate if these entangled states display metrological or computational advantage. This physics can be explored in recently-developed arrays of atoms in free space and in ensembles of superconducting qubits coupled to transmission lines.
