N2 - Results of a study of the impact of automobiles on air and noise pollution are given. The bulk of this study is devoted to the analysis of automotive air pollution problems, although, in the second part of the study, there is a discussion of other environmental consequences of the automobile, including automotive noise, water pollution from used crankcase oil, and solid waste problems from junk cars. It was concluded that a substantial reduction of emissions from new motor vehicles offers the only possibility for the rapid achieve of ambient air quality standards for the pollutants that originate from moving sources. Traffic controls and other strategies designed to modify vehicle usage patterns can be locally effective when applied to central portions of a metropolitan area, but they must be carefully designed to produce the desired reductions in primary pollutant levels in selected areas.
