Why Is Midwifery Essential for a Robust Maternal Healthcare System?

Résumé

The World Health Organization, the International Confederation of Midwives, and the United Nations Population Fund have all recognized the midwifery profession as central to healthy birthing practices globally. Midwifery care is centered on the normalcy of birth. Integration of midwifery care means that midwives are able to practice to their full scope and that they are recognized as essential providers within a healthcare setting and not an alternative. Interprofessional collaboration is an essential component to a robust healthcare system.
