Description
Summary: Does a molecule called CD82 hold
a key to promoting myelin repair in MS?
Background: Myelin, the fatty substance that
surrounds and protects nerve fibers, is
attacked and destroyed in MS. The cells in the
brain that make myelin are called
oligodendrocytes. The brain contains a
population of “spare” immature
oligodendrocytes that need to mature in
order to produce and replace myelin. Finding
ways to encourage this maturation process is
likely to be important for stimulating myein
repair in the brains of people with MS.
